About Us

Established in 2005, The Covered Market brings a piece of Istanbul’s historic Covered Bazaar to Takoma Park. A bazaar is a type of marketplace, and Istanbul’s Kapali Carsi, or Grand Bazaar (literally “Covered Market”), is one of the oldest in modern day Turkey. Traditionally, bazaars were split into corridors, each specializing in different types of goods, including carpets, precious metals, spices, ceramics and copper, as well as small traders selling all types of goods.  In addition to selling a wide variety of goods, Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar also houses two mosques, two hamams, four fountains, and multiple restaurants and cafes. The sprawling complex consists of 12 major buildings and has 22 doors.

The Covered Market in Takoma Park aims to bring a sample of the highest quality Turkish goods to the DC area and beyond. All of our products are carefully selected and imported to reflect only the highest quality of hand crafted products. Everything that we carry is 100% hand made, and, wherever possible, purchased directly from local artisan groups. We carry a wide variety of Turkish goods, including ceramics, jewelry, lamps, throws and pillowcases and carpets. We look forward to sharing our piece of Turkey with you!
